Mrs McKeown's Update Tuesday 2nd Feb 21

2 February 2021 (by Martin Coyne (m.coyne))

First of all thank you for your continued support with everything  we are doing  at Longsands. It is really appreciated by all staff here . Can I ask you to revisit our remote learning policy which was sent out earlier this school year. This will signpost you to how we are using Seesaw to support home learning . A small number of parents have asked if we will be producing ''live'' lessons for those at home . We have obviously considered  all avenues for home learning and we know the way we are conducting our home learning works for our children and staff . OFSTED have noted : ''live lessons are not always more effective than asynchronous approaches''  They have also found in their research children of primary school age cannot concentrate for the length of a full live lesson as they can in school . Therefore this would reduce the effectiveness of the lesson. We also realise the level of adult supervision required for each child at home especially of primary age .  We  have to consider safeguarding our children  and staff . Teachers are producing short videos of explanation which children can keep referring to . We know fixed teaching time is not always an option for some families especially if devices are being shared and /or parents are working from home.

If your child comes into school on a regular or part time basis the activities  on Seesaw are only there for the children  at home on that particular day . It is not extra work for the children in school so you should not make any comment that the work has been done as the teachers already have a record of this . Only make  a comment  if your child is working at home .
As always do not hesitate contacting me if you wish to discuss any information  being sent home or in my messages .
Keep well and warm!!
Mrs Mckeown
