Sports Report

Longsands played two hard-fought games of football against some very talented opposition on Thursday evening.
Starting with a game against St. Anthony's the team had a number of opportunities to score a few goals in a battle which was end to end. Longsands possibly could have found themselves 2 or 3 goals ahead if it wasn't for the heroics of the opposition keeper and shots which hit both the post and crossbar. But there were some fantastic performances from every player to put Longsands 1-0 up at half time. Unfortunately, the opposition scored straight after half time to make it 1-1. The rest of the game was true end to end stuff, with both teams having opportunities to score. There were some tired legs towards the end from the endless running of every player, but we just couldn't find that finish to win the game, despite going so close. The game finished 1-1.

The second game was against a very strong and regimented St. Mary's and St. Edward's side who had obviously played many matches together. They were very slick and fast and found themselves 1-0 up early on in the game. Longsands had to weather a few storms to keep it at 1-0 with some excellent tracking back from everyone and some great saves from Hugo. But the battling paid off when, after some strong play, we equalised. Things got even better for Longsands who then found themselves 2-1 up after a fine finish and a quick counter attack then made it 3-1 to Longsands before half time. Mr Griffiths asked for every player to keep working hard and that is what everyone did in the second half with a lot of resolute defending from everyone on the pitch. There were a few scary moments where the opposition had the chance to score, but we held on until the end for an amazing 3-1 win.
Man of the match went to every player for such brilliant performances.
